The Wedding Cake

The wedding cake is a tradition that began back in the Roman Empire. At the time, it was a loaf of bread that the groom broke over the bride's head as a symbol of his dominance in the marriage and over her...oh my. The color of the cake was typically white to symbolize purity. The joint task of the bride and groom cutting the cake is meant to symbolize their first joint task in married life. The gesture of feeding cake to one another is a symbol of the commitment the bride and groom are making.

....These days the wedding cake is any color and can be anything you imagine! The wedding cake can even be made to mimic a design on your wedding dress or even the church you were married in. Either way it is a great way to add additional color, texture and whimsy to your reception. The average cost of a wedding cake in 2010 was about $6-$12 per slice so make sure it's something that reflects you! And for those of you not so into the idea of a wedding cake there are cup cakes and individual mini cakes that might fit your style a little better.
